So my first week of my last year of the MSW program is over. It was definitely a long week. After being introduced to my internship for the year I'm feeling a little nervous. Its going to be an environment and population I have little to know experience with. Its a shelter for women who are in a period of homelessness, have AOD and or mental health issues, and many have children residing there with them. Many are tangled up in the criminal justice system as well as CPS. The environment itself is pretty hectic from what I experienced. I was told that on Tuesday I'll already have 8-10 women to see and the tough part is that my supervisor is going on vacation just as I start so i wont really get any training on paper work, protocol, or tips on how to address this population. I'm pretty much getting thrown into it and have to hope that I float.
On a lighter note, school went fairly well. I only have to take 3 classes (due to writing the thesis) and the 2 that I've gone to seem interesting so far. I'm taking an advanced mental health class, which is right up my alley of interests, and a mental health rehabilitation class, which seems ok so for. I will have my 3rd class next Saturday. Its a once a month, 8 hour practice class.
The one thing I don't like is that my advanced mental health class is a night class. I really don't like taking night classes, for many reasons but luckily its interesting so that in itself will get me there.
As for this weekend... I'm just appreciating that its a 3 day weekend and soaking it up before the hectic schedule starts again.

Yay! Week 1 over! This internship does sound challenging, esp since you don't have the 4 yr experience you've had with you previous experience. But, you're very good at accurate, quick assessments and taking one thing at a time. Your focus of a healthy and happy lifestyle will bring a new perspective to many of the AOD and possibly many of the women with mental health issues who are within this realm of reality. Plus, getting to be around children can bring a wonderful spark to any moment!
Classes sound very interesting!!! I've had 8 hour clinicals on Saturdays before...those made for some short weekends!!!!!
Remember to be kind to yourself, as you have not received the luxury of being oriented / receiving training for your new internship. The women will be lucky to have such a dedicated young lady as yourself working with them!
Hope you enjoy the remainder of the weekend!
Love the new do! Sounds like it'll be a challenge...just up your alley!
Good luck starting without training. At least it gives you the opportunity to put your own stamp on your work. The women are gonna love you, and I bet you learn a heck of a lot about yourself through the process. Enjoy it!
I bet you will do great Jade. I am looking forward to hearing about how it goes, whatever you feel ok posting about it.
Sounds like it is going to be a busy semester. Good luck on being thrown into what sounds like a real zoo. Hope the night class doesn't mess up your home life too much. Take care!
So exciting to be in the last year, isn't it!!!! I'm so happy for you.
Only 40 weeks to go--hey, you are that busy, 40 weeks will fly by.
Maybe this is the purpose in your life
Good luck
Thanks for checking on me a lot lately with your kind friendship.
And thanks for these updates!
Wow! It sounds like you really are going to be thrown into the deep end with your internship. But, I have no doubt that you will swim just fine.
Like the new hair. Very professional...yet sassy! :)
